30.8.08 -- Independence and a Concert

The day started out simple enough, heading to college with Muffin, getting to classes and learning/watching 'The Apprentice'/discussing about our Echo Kids' generation, etc. Of course, there was the morning flag-raising ceremony (which I failed to attend for fear or being late for class - no matter how much I wanted one of those free flag handouts - darn!).

Then, I skipped my 'ganti' fast that day since my mom and I wisely suspected the concert would no doubt interfere with the breaking-fast time - which it really did, thank you very much. And so, I was free to join Sal, El, Alia, and Mich (note, names shortened for my own personal liking - don't ask, I shorten names of/nickname people all the time ) for lunch at Lisa's Spaghetti, where I ate some white-sauced spaghetti thingy and snared up a couple of Sal's fries.

After classes ended, I had to see Mr. Ben to discuss my core novel CCA project thing and what I wanted to focus on from my reading. I must say, I knew it already but Mr. Ben sure can talk. It's also pretty fascinating to me how he knows so much of all these novels. Then again, the Western culture greatly encourages reading - they're a people who LOVE books!! Plus, he IS an English lecturer, *sigh*.

Either way, the talk was interesting and he helped me narrow my focus down to thoughts on a human's inner-dragon. Gonna ask me what that's supposed to mean? Yeah, well I'm not telling. It's way too complicated to explain anyway and odds are, without reading Grendel no one'd understand me even if I tried.

So onwards to the highlight of this post. If anyone was there over in Stadium Merdeka last night, you'd know what concert I'm talking about in the post title. That's right, none other than punk-rock princess, Avril Lavigne's. And if I do say so myself, if you weren't there, you missed one heck of a show!!

My bro (Raz) and I thought we'd play it smart and headed there early to claim decent seats. Turns out, while we did time our entrance right - seeing as they began letting people in very shortly after we'd arrived - the show didn't kick into gear until a whole two long, wet (yes, it just HAD to pour) hours later.

Picture our luck! It rained on us at Stadium Merdeka, where there is PRACTICALLY NO SHADE!!! Ah well, at least I was bright enough to actually bother bringing an umbrella to the place. Of course, they gave out plastic poncho-like rain coats to keep us decently dry and the rain wasn't deadly like one of those thunderstorm-ish ones we experience so often in our tropical paradise near the equator.

I thought Avril's entrance a blast by the way - all lights of the gigantic stadium shut simultaneously and the booming loud music of the band; then the stage lit up to display its pink, heart-encasing-skull backdrop, which is effortlessly, so Avril. The Diva in question emerged seconds later clad in black and opened the show with that brainwashing song, "Girlfriend" - gah, still stuck in my head! (somebody get it out!!).

Avril, while far from the best vocal-wise in my opinion, showed great showmanship and spirit in her performance; she interacted graciously with the crowd and was very entertaining to watch, despite me having to do so through a pair of binocs (Raz remembered them, thankfully). Also, you'd have to be dumb to deny how talented an artist she (at what, 24?) already is - playing the piano, guitars and drums like a pro). Not forgetting how awesome her band was. Seriously, they were amazing.

My personal favorites were "When you're gone" from when she whipped out that gorgeous piano (pink though), and "Innocence". Both rather slow songs, but her lyrics are touching.

Once again, she's definitely earned her fame. That doesn't however mean that I'd openly show my support like one of those freakish wannabe's in the crowd shouting "Avril, I love you!" or "Be my best-friend!" or some other moronic phrases that she'll otherwise never hear. I'm not that type of person. When I like something, I listen attentively and smile inwardly at its brilliance - not the most expressive but hey, just when have I ever been all that expressive in person?

The concert lasted say a little over an hour as Avril closed it with one of my favorite upbeat songs from her discography, "Sk8ter Boy". Well, happy wishes to her with her future career and great thanks for the A-W-E-S-O-M-E show. If only I could have brought my Sony Cybershot camera along, so would have loved to snap my own memories. Alas, I shall have to rely on Aza, maybe.

If I get my hands on those pictures, I'll post them up eventually. If not, well, sorry. XP

The rest is still unwritten...
