13.10.08 -- Gamarjobat!!! XD

Yeah yeah, I don't know what the heck that *points to the post title* means. I don't even know if it's an actual word in Japanese or some other language I can't understand! Well, whatever it means (assuming the possibility it might have some meaning or significance), it was the name two very funny, Japanese mime-comedians allowed themselves as a duo-group; separately known as Ketch! - for those who watched their show while it airs here in Bangsar's Actors Studios, you'll know - who spots a bright red Mohican, and HIRO-PON with a similar hair-do, only blonde.

Now before you peeps start thinking "What's so great about mime?" I beg your pardon...

PLEASE. DON'T.

These two were certainly providing the audience with some master class entertainment the night my family and I made the crowd. And yes, mind you, they said not a single intelligible word the entire time of their one-and-a-half hour show, without intermission, mind you.

One bone to pick with the performance however - I was quite under the impression miming requires one not to speak or even make a sound but these guys lent their performance various accompaniments of grunts, growls, sighs, music, stage sound effects, etc. (somewhat SIMS-ish in my opinion, lol, SIMS language XD). Basically things not, as far as my knowledge invokes, part of traditional mime. Then again, I guess these guys never really did lay down any specifications on being 'traditional' when it comes to their acting.
On the good side (which is staggeringly heavier than the bad), first off, if it's one thing I love about the Japanese culture is how efficient they are in time management. Seriously, for once the show STARTS ON TIME!!!

*ponders on the possibility of her nation achieving Vision 2020...she can't see it happening*

If you catch my drift, that is. If not, go figure!

Either way, the duo's miming skills are absolutely superb. Gosh I can't even begin to describe how good they are but their motions were very fluid and believable - you almost believe there's an invisible rope, chair, table, glass of water, *thinks "What else?"* Oh! And how certain moves you'd normally think impossible without the aid of some barely-visible-thread...apparently BECAME POSSIBLE!!! Not to mention their unbelievably synchronized timing in almost every reaction!
How on earth did those guys do those things?!

I honestly wish I knew. It must have taken some serious rehearsals and countless practice and re-perfection.

There's also the matter of spectator involvement and interaction with the crowd. We did so many kinds of different 'waves' it was endlessly fun and I truly wish it'd gone on longer. Cheer 2009 future emcees would do well to learn the lot so we don't all get stuck doing the same old Mexican Wave again.

The Penguin Band sketch was pretty fun. I can still remember their switch to the use of high-pitched voice expressions when in penguin-mode and the funny penguin greeting which is now a comical running gag in my head. Plus they weren't even normal penguins but 'rocker' ones with talent at the guitar that would rival many accomplished guitarists of the global music market. The music definitely had a strong Rock N' Roll vibe to it, something along the lines of an Elvis Presley song. Jail House Rock??

And then there was, the more 'mime-ish' part of their performance, taking a setting of the Wild West. Summarizing it as briefly as I can put it (you people know I rant, right?), it's about a young cowboy who meets this girl (yes, they're a duo, picture 'cross dressing' XP) at a town bar and takes they start to fall in love. And then comes the whole rival-thing going when this WANTED tyrant shooter comes into the picture and just so happens to be the murderer or our hero-cowboy's father (a flash back into his childhood was provided).

Now the story does have a happy ending but, surely everyone in the audience has to admit, those sad parts of the story - like when the little-cowboy saw his dad die on his own birthday - were incredibly touching and almost had me in tears...almost. And it usually takes a whole lot to bring me to that point. Then there was also the beautiful significance of the 'music box' throughout the entire sketch storyline, which was magnificent, and the slow-motion action-movie thing they have during climatic moments - the gun-draw showdown between the cowboy and the tyrant, in this case.

Overall, it was really spectacular! I'm so glad I went to watch it. But gosh must those two be unquestionably fit to have performed some of the stunts they did that day - news flash, it's NOT EASY!!

Of course, they clarified at the end of the show of how they COULD speak, haha! Their English isn't all that bad too! There were several standing ovations noted as well. My review, a MUST watch, for the heck of it. Tickets weren't easy though but hey, if they somehow come again, who knows?

The rest is still unwritten...
